Introduction to Overshoes

Wiggle Buyer’s Guide: Overshoes Riding in winter can be a lot of fun as there’s little to top the feeling of beating the worst of the elements. Winter means wet, cold weather and the bits of the body that winter weather hits hardest are your extremities - hands and feet. If they get cold, its usually not too long before the ride comes to an end. Keeping feet warm is a tough task for cyclists as water attacks from all directions. Overshoes are wind and or waterproof covers which fit over your cycling shoes. Overshoes form a direct barrier between the elements and the bike shoes and consequently your feet, They trap air inside your shoes and allow the heat from your feet to warm the trapped air and remain warm. Most budget overshoes use neoprene, while high end ones use a waterproof microporous membrane such as Gore Tex. There are also some purely windproof versions which often use a rubberised Lycra material, and which you choose will be the key decision you need to make when choosing your overshoes. It is worth remembering that neoprene overshoes won’t actually keep your feet dry like GoreTex will as neoprene isn’t waterproof so you do get wet shoes and potentially feet, but neoprene does trap air and allows it to remain warm - just like scuba wet suits. Velcro and or zips to secure the covers over the shoes and most have some sort of reflective material for safety during dark winter rides.

Entry level:

Basic overshoes, these will primarily be made of single skins of neoprene, expect two sides stitched together. Possibly with toe and heel reinforcement to add durability. Fit is good, though may require some extra wiggling to work them fully on the shoes. These will keep you relatively comfortable in mild wet conditions - so most of the British winter.

Intermediate:

At this level you can begin to expect to find overshoes that can genuinely live up to the promise of warm dry feet. Also the fit begins to improve with manufacturers giving greater care to create shapes that fit snugly over shoes without puckers or voids. Thicker, warmer neoprene occasionally with a waterproof membrane, reflectivity, extra reinforcement at wear areas.

Performance:

The luxury end of the market. These overshoes make the worst conditions seem bearable, with fully waterproof microporous membranes to keep water out but let feet breathe. Some, though not all will also have extra insulation and reflectivity. Fit and durability will also be increased.
