Introduction to Gloves - Winter

Gloves for riding are essential regardless of weather you’re commuting to work, spinning along the canal to the pub or racing - gloves give you the control and protection you need to get the best ride possible. There are as many different types, weights and technologies in winter cycling gloves as there are types of bike, most riders tend to accumulate several pairs of varying style to rotate between as the season, ride length or weather conditions change. Of course, some riders just settle on a favourite model and get a few pairs the same, while they’re available, as models of gloves are well known to be chopped, changed or updated with great regularity. Aside from your ears, feet on the pedals and your bottom on the saddle, it’s your hands on the handlebars which make up the possibly most overlooked of the rider contact patch areas, especially in the cold of winter time. Hands and particularly fingers are in direct line of fire from the oncoming chill wind. Look out for versions made from simple neoprene - ideal for warmer rainy days, heavier materials laminated with a microporous membrane for heavy rain in colder conditions and then there are the fully padded thermal models for the very coldest days. Wiggle has models featuring each type of construction and a wide range of prices.

Entry level:

Full finger with as much thermal material as you think is necessary makes up your basic style choice, but you should be expecting to find lightweight backs with a thin synthetic leather palm material such as Clarino. Wrist closures, wrist pull tabs and silicone grip tabs are all worth keeping an eye out for.

Intermediate:

Going up in price, the fit of gloves generally improves, especially on the fingers where the cheaper modes can be a pinch. Finger length is also more accurate. You will also find gloves with various forms of built in palm padding - how much you choose or to have any at all is a personal taste issue, so experiment to see whet you need/like the feel of as you ride.

Performance:

Winter gloves which ‘fit like gloves‘ if you‘ll pardon the pun, the very best modern hi tech materials will keep their thermal abilities, shape and performance even after repeated wash cycles. Given you’re spending at the top end of the scale you should be able to find the perfect glove with the technical features you require.
